Kosmos Ensemble perfoms for Weston Music Society
Internationally acclaimed Kosmos are three times winners of ‘Selected Artists’ by the Making Music organisation. United by a shared passion for improvisation, music from around the globe as well as the rigours of classical training each member brings individual flavour to the group. Each one of these musicians is a soloist in their own right: Harriet is an international concerto soloist with a particular interest in contemporary music; Meg is a unique viola player specialising in world and folk music styles including Celtic, Romanian, Greek and Middle-Eastern music; Milos is an international competition winner on the classical accordion with a passion for tango and Balkan music. Prepare to be intoxicated by entrancing dance rhythms, soulful improvisation and Gypsy passion delivered with inimitable panache and virtuoso technique. As described by Richard Morrison, chief music critic of The Times they have “telepathic rapport, dazzling virtuosity, serious scholarship, intellectual curiosity and impeccable musicianship. I defy you not to be mesmerised.” They have each travelled extensively, performing with and learning from musicians from all over the world, as well as within the broad multiculturalism of London’s music scene. They have collectively studied music from North Africa, the Middle East, Turkey, Russia, Hungary, Serbia, Romanian Jewish and Gypsy music, Greek Rembetika and Island music, Argentine tango, Celtic and jazz traditions as well as contemporary classical music. They combine all their knowledge with a respect for their own Western classical music training, performing freely with panache, innovation and creativity, incorporating improvisation into their own unique arrangements and compositions. Performing highlights include live broadcasts on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, Radio London, performances at the Royal Albert Hall (Ignite Series), Leeds International Concert Season, Wales Millenium Centre, London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Vortex Jazz Club, Festivals in the UK and abroad include the Portello River Festival in Padua (on national television), Hydra Rebetika Festival, Greece (on national television), Krakow Festival Estival (Poland), Bilbao, Jewish International festival in Leeds, Chichester, Deal, Ryedale, Swaledale, Hexham, Bluehouse. Kosmos is also proud of its outreach work and has performed all around Britain as part of the Live Music Mow! Scheme! The group has had amazing experiences bringing music to children with special needs, older people, prisoners and victims of human trafficking. In 2018 Kosmos will be premiering a concerto written for them by Errollyn Wallen at the Jersey Liberation Festival with the Jersey Chamber Orchestra. They will also be performing the concerto in the headlining concert in the Festival of Chichester in Chichester Cathedral with the Worthing Symphony Orchestra and at the Beaumaris Festival with the Welsh Chamber Orchestra.
